TheFatherLife.com: Osburn On Tap: Deck the Beer Halls

The calendar continues to roar towards 2009 and we are smack dab in the thick of the holiday rush. I know it’s sad, but some of us haven’t even begun, let alone finished, our holiday shopping mere days before the big event. At the time I write this, I myself have only finished about 45% of my total Christmas shopping. I can only hope that I’ll be done by the time this article appears online. But, since I tend to fall under a lot of male clichés, I will most likely have one or two more items to buy on Christmas Eve. Let’s just hope the lines aren’t as long as they were last year...

TheFatherLife.com: NFL Power Rankings: Week 16

There are big changes in the rankings this week. The Titans, who have held the top spot for pretty much the whole season, have been bounced by the upstart Steelers. The only other time Tennessee wasn’t holding a tight grip on the top spot was in weeks 6, 13, and 14. The top spot was taken by the Giants during those weeks. The G-men are the only other team to sit at the top of my rankings, so Pittsburgh climbing to the top of the mountain this late in the season changes the whole AFC playoff outlook tremendously...

TheFatherLife.com: NFL Power Rankings: Week 15

The NFL season is coming down to the wire and a few teams have already clinched playoff spots. The Titans, Giants, and Cardinals have all clinched spots in the postseason. Tennessee and New York are recent playoff teams, but the Cards haven’t made the playoffs since 1998. They haven’t even had a winning season in ten years. They also clinched a home playoff game for the first time since 1947...

TheFatherLife.com: NFL Power Rankings Week 14.

I don’t think anyone will disagree with me that this year’s crop of Thanksgiving NFL games had to be one of the worst in history. The Titans beat the hapless Lions by 37 points, the Cowboys beat the sad Seahawks by 25, and the one game that was supposed to be decent ended with the Eagles trouncing the shell-shocked Cardinals by 28, proving once again that there is some kind of Voodoo curse that won’t let Arizona win a game on the east coast...

TheFatherLife.com: NFL Power Rankings: Week 13

What the heck, guys? How could you do this to me? We were all so close to being able to enjoy the saddest sporting event in the history of the world, but the selfish New York Jets had to take that possible delight away from us. If they hadn’t been so tacky in their defeat of the Titans, we would all be chatting it up, around our respective water coolers, about Tennessee and Detroit. It should have been the most magically terrible game in history, the 12-0 Titans against the 0-12 Lions. Party pooper Brett Favre had to swoop in and ruin it for all of us. That was totally uncouth, man. Thanks to your lack of any sense of propriety, this Turkey Day match up is just another blah game...

Genesee Valley Parent Magazine: Outdoor Winter Fun

The Rochester area has a lot to offer your family, not just in the summer, but in the winter months as well. Every cold weather activity that you and your family can think up is just a short drive or day trip away – from sledding and snow-tubing, skiing and snowboarding, hiking, snowshoeing and ice skating to a winter visit to the zoo. Rochester has it all covered, especially when it's cold and snowy outside...

TheFatherLife.com: Osburn On Tap: Turkey Day

As the crumpled red and yellow leaves crunch beneath our feet, the days grow shorter exponentially, and the calendar continues to tumble toward 2009, we are once again on the eve of the holiday season. It seems like 80 degree days filled with blinding sun were just mere weeks ago, but they’ve really been gone (besides a few random unseasonably warm November days) for months. It’s late November and we are left wondering how autumn and its cold temperatures (at least in the northeast) came and took over so quickly...

TheFatherLife.com: NFL Power Rankings: Week 12

I know the Titans still haven’t lost, but how awesome would it be if the Super Bowl was New York versus New York. In the Jets case, it would be like a Hollywood movie ending. The wily, old veteran comes out of “retirement” to lead a scruffy team to the Super Bowl. In the preseason, the Giants obviously didn’t get as much love as they deserved, even though they were the defending champs, but they were expected to make the playoffs. Nobody picked the Jets to do very much this year. Other than Brett Favre and Kris Jenkins, the team didn’t look all that much different from the squad that only won four games in ’07...

TheFatherLife.com: NFL Power Rankings: Week 11

There are two key questions that have been plaguing me this week. When will the Tennessee Titans lose, and when will the Detroit Lions win? The Titans held on to the top spot in my rankings and remained undefeated with a 21-14 victory over the Chicago Bears. They play at Jacksonville this weekend in a game they will definitely be favored to win, and then they have to face the suddenly deadly New York Jets on November 23rd. Detroit travels to Carolina to take on the Panthers this weekend and then will tangle with Tampa Bay at home on November 23rd...

TheFatherLife.com: NFL Power Rankings: Week 10

Rob Bironas kicked a forty-one yard field goal in overtime to defeat the Green Bay Packers and keep the Tennessee Titans undefeated at the mid-point of the season. The Titans are one of the strangest stories of the ’08 season...

TheFatherLife.com: Osburn On Tap: Halloween In a Bottle

Since I only write this column once per month, I usually touch upon a big holiday or beer related event and this month is no different. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays for a variety of reasons. I know it sounds cliché, but I’m twenty-seven years old and I’m really just a big kid. I still pine for the days of playing the original Super Mario Brothers all day in my pajamas during a snow day. I miss playing waffle ball in my front yard for hours on end with my brothers. I feel like I need to hold onto my youth as long as possible, and Halloween is the easiest way I know how to do it. It’s ok to be a kid again once a year...

TheFatherLife.com: NFL Power Rankings: Week 9

What is wrong with Peyton Manning and the Colts? They had a 14-6 lead in the third quarter and looked to be shutting down Tennessee’s offense when I changed the channel to watch the World Series. When I returned, what seemed like minutes later, the Titans had a 31-14 lead. Manning scored on a QB plunge with just over a minute left to make the score 31-21, but the outcome of the game was already decided.

It’s the midpoint of the season for some teams and the Titans are still the only undefeated team at 7-0. The defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants got back on the winning track and are the only one loss team left after Buffalo fell to a tenacious Miami squad and Pittsburgh lost to the champs by a touchdown...

TheFatherLife.com: NFL Power Rankings: Week 8

Another week goes by and the Titans are still undefeated and Vince Young is still on the sideline. Kerry Collins only had 123 passing yards, but Chris Johnson had 168 rushing yards and LenDale White chipped in with 149 of his own.

The Cowboys and Broncos went from contenders to big-time pretenders with disappointing losses. The Buffalo Bills, fresh from their bye week, rebounded from a loss to defeat the San Diego not-so-super Chargers 23-14 and move up a few spots.

Many of the top and bottom teams remain mostly unchanged since last week although the middle is so close that teams seem to easily take a tumble with a loss. This is the most wide open the NFL has been in years. There is no clear cut favorite, and that’s really exciting...

TheFatherLife.com: NFL Rankings: Week 7.

Wow, my power rankings look mighty different this week than they did just seven days ago. It’s as if someone took all the teams and put them into a cement mixer, turned it on as fast as it could go and let the teams spill out all over the sidewalk. As Elvis would say, my rankings are “all shook up.”

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

TheFatherLife.com: NFL Power Rankings: Week 6

And then there were two. Only the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans remain undefeated after the Buffalo Bills fell in dramatic fashion to the Arizona Cardinals 41-17. The Giants cemented themselves at #1 in my first official rankings because of their 44-6 pasting of a once proud Seahawks team. The Titans kept rolling with a close 13-10 win over the Ravens and are the first team to reach five wins in ’08… even without Vince Young...

TheFatherLife.com:The October Rundown

The Major League Baseball regular season has reached its commencement, and an elite eight teams remain in the hunt for October glory. A crazy season ended with some regular playoff squads in, some teams without a lot of postseason history in, and many high profile teams left out. Missing are the New York Yankees, home for the first time since 1993, when I was twelve. In are the Milwaukee Brewers, who hadn’t made the post season since 1982, when I was only a year old. Out are the New York Mets, the only team in history to blow a 3-game plus division lead two Septembers in a row...

TheFatherLife.com:The AFC East Is Up For Grabs

The AFC East is up for grabs. That’s right, at the time I write this, we are three games into the season and there is no clear cut favorite. The Bills are 3-0 and have scored the third most points in the AFC while not allowing a 100 yard rusher, but they have been known to get their fans hopes up only to bash them away with inconsistency. The Patriots are 2-1, but the two wins are over a hapless Kansas City Squad and the very questionable New York Jets. Their loss was this past week, a 38-13 shellacking at the hands of a Dolphin’s team that only won one game last season and didn’t do much upgrading. The Jet’s are 1-2 with a close 20-14 win over Miami, a loss to New England, and a 48-29 pasting at the hands of the formerly winless San Diego Chargers. The Miami Dolphins are also 1-2, with losses to the Jets and Arizona Cardinals in weeks one and two. They followed those two emotionless defeats with the extremely confusing and utterly embarrassing dismantling of the Patriots...

TheFatherLife.com: Osburn On Tap: Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest, Octoberfest, whatever way you spell it, it means that summer is over, the leaves are starting to change color and it is officially time to recognize the beginning of fall. It’s not all bad news though, if Oktoberfest has arrived, it also means the style of beer is now readily available. Most beer enthusiasts know a fair amount about this festival, but for those who only know Oktoberfest from the movie BeerFest, here’s the scoop on this most beloved of German holidays...

TheFatherLife.com: NFL 2008 Season Preview: AFC

AFC East:

New England Patriots
The last time we heard from the New England Patriots they were in the midst of ending their season on the wrong end of one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl History. The New York Giants beat the previously undefeated Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII last February. The pats lost in their bid to go 19-0 and tie the 1972 Dolphins. That ’72 Miami team remains the only undefeated team in NFL history. The Patriots are still the Patriots though, and with Tom Brady at the helm, they are still the odds on favorite to win Super Bowl XLIII...

TheFatherLife.com: Osburn On Tap: Caped Cod

We all know the importance of this time of year. For those with children, it is the time just before school starts in September when there is still room for one last summer hurrah: the road trip. Families and friends all around the country pack up their minivans, sedans, or–if they are unlucky–Mini Coopers with all the trip necessities and head off to that beach destination, big city, or cruise that they have been dreaming about since that day in February when there was three feet of snow blocking their front door...

Metromix Rochester: Still time for Abbott's this summer.

If you’re eating Rochester-favorite Garbage Plate for dinner what makes for the perfect local dessert to follow it? Doyle finished the regular season with 23 goals and 17 assists, while splitting time this season between midfield and attack...

NB Zip Championship weekend is looming on the horizon and the Rochester Rattlers are one of four teams still alive. It was a season of streaks. Levin keys Rochester's rout of Washington

A wise man once said, "I got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell."
That man was Christopher Walken - portraying uber-successful record producer Bruce Dickinson on an infamous Saturday Night Live sketch - and that quote never seemed more true than it did on Saturday night in downtown Rochester, when the Rattlers' management handed out thousands of the clanging metal noisemakers and the raucous crowd of 4,227 put them to good use....

I played High School lacrosse at Brighton in Rochester, New York. Even though I never played organized lacrosse after the last game of my senior year, I still remember the family atmosphere that my coaches instilled in all of us. The much anticipated match up between Alex Smith and Danny Brennan at the face-off "X" will have to wait for another game, because Brennan didn't dress. TheFatherLife.com - Major League Lacrosse: 2008 season preview

By: Chris Osburn
May 26, 2008

Sports fans know that Canada is famous for hockey (their national sport), but few people know that hockey is one of two national sports, the other being lacrosse. The fastest growing sport at the youth level in the U.S., lacrosse is by far the most exciting sport that America overlooks on a regular basis. Unless you live in the hotbeds of the lacrosse universe, Long Island, Western New York, and Maryland, you probably don't know an awful lot about one of the oldest sports in world history, with origins dating back to the 1100s...

By: Chris Osburn
May 26, 2008

Should you feel bad for adding extra ingredients to your beer to enhance the flavor? In the case of Corona, I’m fairly sure it’s mandatory. There really is no point in drinking a Corona if you forgot to purchase limes. I guarantee if you took a Pabst Blue Ribbon and added a lime to it; it would taste exactly like a Corona. But what about other brews? Should you feel any regret for adding another flavor or two into the mix?

Welcome to the greatest show on...the internet?

Welcome to "Chris Osburn Writes". I figured it's about time I made a place for people to find links to all of my work in one place. This is much more professional (in theory) than using Myspace and Facebook.

*Also, on here I don't have to worry about people tagging embarrassing photos of me that really have nothing to do with my writing.

So, feel free to browse the links to see all of my past work. To start, they will be posted for the magazine or newspaper they correspond with.

Whenever I have a new article, I will link to that as well.

Cheers,
